THIRTEENTH GUEST FEAT. AMAZON FASHION

I’m not entirely sure what it is, but I’ve been on a 1930s-40s movie kick lately, and I recently rewatched one of my favorites as a child: The Mystery of the 13th Guest. It’s truly such a cult-classic whodunnit where your newly 21-year-old protagonist, Marie Morgan revisits her grandfather’s house per his (dying) instruction when she was a child. Without giving the plot away, let’s just say this one is a little cheesy (of course, I never noticed that growing up) but it reminded me how so many films like this center around the coming-of-age of a woman. There’s a lot that can be said about this and the lense by which the audience views it (I’d say the ‘male gaze’ is pretty spot on here), but it is interesting to note that the females often do make it out alive, like [spoiler alert] Marie does in this one. Watching these stories back with a critical eye is so much fun, and I’d recommend anyone to do it.

Inspired by this film, I thought I’d share this little outfit I put together inspired by ‘30s fashion. I started with this flared black skirt from Storets — can’t find this one but found an extremely similar one from SHEIN here (at half the price!). It reminds me of all the textured fabrics and flares women donned in the 30s, with a little ruching to bring it into the twenty-first century. Next, I paired the look with this Tie Top from Amazon Fashion. It’s not too referential, but I think the sweater-ribbed material feels a little vintage and similar to this time. I paired the look with chunky Vince Camuto flatform sandals — and my Gucci Pochette. Also, my 90-year-old grandmother made this choker, so that’s pretty chill too.

Leaving you with (as always) a power-house female quote from the Bard:

“O, men's vows are women's traitors! All good seeming, by thy revolt, o husband, shall be thought put on for villany; not born where't grows, but worn a bait for ladies.”
