YOUTH FEAT. ASOS

Back in January, I had the pleasure of seeing Kimberly Akimbo at the Atlantic Theater Company before it closed. The show follows the story of Kimberly a-soon-to-be 16 year old, who suffers from a degenerative disease that causes her to age at a much faster pace than her peers — I’m talking like, by decades (she looks about 70). Not only was Victoria Clark stellar as the unusual protagonist, she really sold the character thanks to the way they styled her — with long earrings, beaded necklaces, chunky bracelets, Y2k-looking plastic rings and more. The whole story is such an interesting take on age and time — but I found the styling to be even more interesting because it drew attention to something else fascinating: the fact that we assign age to clothes and accessories we wear. Why is it that our style changes as we mature? Who says you can’t rock more youthful-looking dress, or a necklace with neon beads or stick-on earrings? Body shimmer, anyone? What about french braids, pigtails? These little details have always been a hint to how old we are — when in fact — they shouldn’t be assigned to a time or an age-appropriate decade.

Celebrating the youth that fashion allows us to achieve through styling, I put together this look recently with some eye-catching accessories. First, the dress is from Cider (similar here). I wanted something that was nostalgic but with a twist — and I think this collared halter was perfect. I paired it with a cropped denim jacket, and went super young with my accessories, starting with these neon orange shoes from ASOS! (Wanted to note that these are not wide-fit, not sure why they’re labeled that way). To add another element of youth, I paired the look with this light neon orange bag from Amazon. The hard plastic makes it super fun, and it’s even cooler that the acrylic finish is see-through.

Overall, a little bit of young + a little bit of old: a look I’ll always strive for.

“Youth’s a stuff will not endure.”
